Organizational Planning

The ability of a board and an organization to envision and reach its full potential can be a reality. This systematic process will enable any organization to determine where it is going, how to get there, and examine what to do when change occurs. The process uniquely incorporates each board meeting with the implementation of the strategic plan. The mission is never far from any discussion or decision. The implementation process for the strategic plan is fully documented and easy to implement.

Organizational planning is the continuous process of systematically making plans with the greatest possible knowledge of the future; organizing the activities needed to carry out the plans; and monitoring the results of the plans through feedback.

More specifically, planning is a continuous process of:

  • Involving the right stakeholders.
  • Performing internal and external assessments.
  • Strategically defining direction.
  • Identifying key priorities.
  • Agreeing on the organizational plans.
  • Monitoring the implementation of the plans.

Why do Organizational Planning?

It is a basic premise that shared strategic thinking and behaving are more important than the completed, written plans themselves. The written plan becomes the reminder of the agreements and shared strategic thinking. There are many benefits for an organization to invest time and resources in a planning process. Some of these benefits are:

  • Achieving clarity and agreement on the organization’s mission and vision
  • Building a more participative board and membership by being aligned on the same purpose
  • Practicing effective stewardship
  • Anticipating and effectively managing change
  • Being strategic in decision-making and problem-solving
  • Building on existing strengths of the organization
  • Overcoming existing weaknesses
  • Responding to opportunities as an organization
  • Identifying and blocking threats
  • Continuously improving processes and products within the organization
  • Maintaining a healthy competitive advantage
  • Maintaining a balance between people (relationships), process (the way things are done), and product (results)

What KM Consulting and Training Connection will contribute

A tailored Organizational Planning process that builds on the existing expertise and data within your organization. We will work with a representative Core Planning Team to:

  • Train a Core Team on how to implement the Organizational Planningã process.
  • Define and gather data necessary for the planning process (historical information, internal and external customer input, trends)
  • Facilitate a meeting of key stakeholders to practice potential future scenarios.
  • Facilitate the development of a mission and vision statement, vision priorities, and guiding principles with key stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement plans to achieve the vision.
  • Examine the structure of the organization to determine how it will support the vision.
  • Develop and initiate a process for using, reviewing and updating the plans.
  • Sunset the existing Core Team and charter a new team for the next planning cycle.
  • Assess the impact of the first planning cycle.

Core team meetings will be purposefully structured to allow participants to experience teamwork and build consensus.

As a result of implementing the Organizational Planning process you will have:

  • A tailored step-by-step process to use year after year and the documentation necessary to facilitate that process.
  • A historical synopsis that can be updated annually.
  • A trend analysis covering all aspects of behavior and events that are directly or indirectly affecting your nonprofit.
  • Internal and external customer feedback to evaluate the quality and level of customer service within your nonprofit.
  • An opportunity to practice potential future scenarios for your nonprofit.
  • A shared mission statement declaring why your nonprofit exists.
  • A shared vision statement describing the desired future state of your nonprofit.
  • A list of agreed-upon guiding principles that govern the behavior of individuals in your nonprofit.
  • Vision priorities, goals, and action plans supporting the vision priorities that allow your nonprofit to achieve the vision.
  • A review of the structure and systems of your nonprofit and how individuals will work together to accomplish the goals.
  • The timing and steps for monitoring and implementing the plan.
